THE FIRST DRAFT OF THE BOOK was completed in 1928. Until near the end of his life Gurdjieff had chapters read to his students while he observed them closely and made changes in the text accordingly. The book was published in 1950. Seven years later a revision of the book began. The revised edition was published in 1993. It evoked much controversy and was later withdrawn.
