The Life & Significance
of George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff, Part II
Gurdjieff's Mission:
Introducing The Teaching
to the West, 1912–1924

Cover of the Gurdjieff's Mission video SHOT ON SITE IN ST. PETERSBURG, Moscow, Constantinople, London, Fontainebleau-en-Avon, New York and Lascaux, this documentary video—narrated by William Patrick Patterson and based on his book Struggle of the Magicians—retraces Gurdjieff's mission to introduce the teaching to the West. P.D. Ouspensky's and J.G. Bennett's enigmatic relationship with Gurdjieff are explored. Particularly stressed are the "St. Petersburg Conditions" and Gurdjieff's technique of "divine acting." The video vividly demonstrates Gurdjieff's warning to America of the rise and challenge of the East with footage recalling the 9/11 attack and its aftermath.

Gurdjieff's Mission won the rarely given Gold Jury Award for outstanding documentary excellence at WorldFest, one of the oldest and most prestigious international film festivals. Of the 4,300+ entries, Gurdjieff's Mission was one of three finalists for the film festival's Grand Award. Past first-time winners at WorldFest include such notable directors as Ang Lee, John Frankenheimer, David Lynch, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. The documentary division is especially strong with entries from PBS and the Discovery Channel. Last year the Gold winner was The Endurance, the story of Shackleton's Antarctic exploration.

This video is available through the Gurdjieff Legacy online bookstore. Gurdjieff Legacy carries Fourth Way books, videos and music as well as an interesting selection of hard-to-find books on a variety of esoteric topics.
