Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man
GURDJIEFF'S
PLAN WAS TO CREATE AN INSTITUTE to train "helper-instructors" who would
then spread the teaching. He first tried to establish the Institute in
Moscow but the Russian Revolution forced him to depart for Essentuki.
Here he opened the Institute but the mass psychosis of the time forced
him to leave for Tiflis. In Tiflis and later in Constantinople he again
opened the Institute and closed it because of the harrowing conditions.
In Europe he first hoped to open the Institute in Berlin and later in
London before finally establishing it at the Château du Prieuré
at Fontainebleau-en-Avon.
